Yesterday 7 February 2021, on the occasion of the Day of Solidarity with Belarus, the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, announced additional funding of €2.25 million to Belarus in support of the democratic movement.
EED will partner with Canada to ensure this funding can best respond to the needs of civil society in Belarus. EED’s focus will be on providing demand-driven grant support to pro-democracy activists in Belarus, with a particular emphasis on women-led political, media and civic initiatives.
As Belarus marks six months of peaceful protests, these grants will provide important support to activists as the protests evolve into a more long-term pro-democracy movement.
