Despite the democratic hopes of the Arab Spring, Egypt has seen a return towards authoritarian tendencies. Economic woes remain acute and corruption is rife at all levels of government. A recent law regulating activities on non-governmental organisations has threatened to shrink further the already highly restrictive environment for civil society. Many donors find it increasingly difficult to operate in the country.

EED approach and added value

  • Fill the gap in the current funding for civil society
  • Engage with pro-democracy activists and youth groups to build their capacity
  • Help to preserve space for voicing critical opinions

Examples of supported initiatives

  • Initiatives supporting human rights activists and documenting human rights abuses
  • Independent media outlets
  • Fledging civic organisations
