Initiative summary:

Established in 2017, Media and Law Studies Association provides legal aid to journalists who are victims of legal harassment and arbitrary detention and who are criminalised for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and information. With EED’s support, they have hired lawyers and organised prison visits. They are also setting up an emergency hotline for journalists and holding seminars on access to legal mechanisms. Specific attention is devoted to journalists at risk who are out of the main cities, in particular in predominantly Kurdish-populated areas of Turkey, where there is a pressing need for adequate legal representation.
