Our work

Since inception, EED has supported over 600 initiatives aimed at promoting democracy in the EU neighbourhood and beyond. This database provides an insight into the work of EED partners over the years. However, due to the sensitive nature of certain initiatives and personal security risks facing some grantees in the restrictive environments where they operate, not all initiatives are listed in the database.

  • Youth for Skopje

    Country: North Macedonia

    For years, North Macedonian activist Dimitar Todoroski has managed Youth for Skopje, a series of concerts to engage youth and promote democratic values. Thanks to EED’s support, Todoroski is organising 10 new concerts that aim to challenge traditional societal norms, disseminate alternative values and foster critical thinking among the youth, encouraging them to see themselves as actors of change.

  • Balkan Civil Society Development Network

    Country: North Macedonia

    A well-known regional organization in the Western Balkans, Balkan Civil Society Development Network advocates for a bigger space for civil society with different stakeholders. With EED’s support, they are monitoring the impact of Covid-19 on civil society in the region, facilitating exchange of information and expertise as well as joint action to improve the effectiveness of civil society organisations’ actions in the response to the pandemic.

  • Centre for Investigative Journalism SCOOP Macedonia

    Country: North Macedonia

    Center for Investigative Journalism SCOOP Macedonia is a well-known online media, which has built its reputation on investigative and anti-corruption stories. The centre is considered a highly relevant actor in the media scene of North Macedonia, providing quality news during the Covid-19 crisis, holding the government accountable and ensuring greater transparency on assets held by public officials. Most of the centre’s funding is project-based, and they lack core support and development grants. During the Covid-19 pandemic, when donor programmes were being restructured, SCOOP faced an unexpected financial situation, putting at risk their entire operations. EED provided them with an emergency grant to cover running costs during this crisis.

  • Strengthening Democracy through credible on-line reporting

    Country: North Macedonia

    360 Degrees is an independent media production company from Skopje, specialising in investigative reporting. In recent years, 360 Degrees has produced a TV show, which has become a journalistic landmark for the entire country, addressing challenges such as political affairs, corruption and social issues. At the end of 2019, the 360 Degrees team initiated a new product – an online media project that seeks to shape the daily news agenda in North Macedonia – by filling the gap to provide fact-checked, reliable and in-depth information in the country’s online media sphere. EED provided a start-up grant related to this activity, covering the cost of the website development and other running expenses.

  • Youthopia

    Country: North Macedonia

    North Macedonia is dealing with the biggest ever brain drain in its history and young people are choosing to immigrate abroad rather than to stay and invest time for their country.
    The Youth Association Ekvalis from Skopje aims to mobilise and engage youth in meaningful democratic processes in their local communities through activism. The organisation has implemented several micro projects and runs three separate youth clubs: a gender equality club, an ability club with disabled youth, and a media lab. EED provided Ekvalis a grant to cover their core expenses and activities, enabling this organisation to sustain and restructure itself, by involving more innovative approaches in youth activism.

    Ius et Juventus is a recently established association of young lawyers based in North Macedonia. They seek to improve citizen participation in local government by providing citizens with free legal counsel on their rights and means by which to hold local authorities in North Macedonia accountable

  • Empowering Political Debate Club

    Country: North Macedonia

    The Balkan Institute for Regional Cooperation (BIRC) are the creators of the Political Debate Club (PDC), a non-news online media platform catering to both Albanians and Macedonians and North Macedonia. The platform publishes objective analyses and interpretation of ongoing realities in the country and aims to forge a space for dialogue across the region on topics in politics, culture and economy. With EED’s support the PDC will be able to publish an increased amount of quality publications.

  • Youth Association YMCA Bitola

    Country: North Macedonia

    YMCA Bitola is non-profit, inclusive youth association that aims to provide opportunities for local youth and actively work with them at the community level. EED will support one of the association’s main activities, the annual youth leadership camp in Macedonia.
