Today 9 December 2019, David McAllister MEP, and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, was unanimously elected as the new Chair of the European Endowment for Democracy Board of Governors during the Board of Governor’s bi-annual meeting.

McAllister will take over from the interim Chair Christian Leffler, Deputy Secretary-General for Economic and Global Issues at European Union External Action Service (EEAS), who took on the role following the resignation of EED’s previous Chair, Elmar Brok, last June.

Following his election, McAllister stated, “I have been an MEP since 2014 and I have chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament since 2017. I have appreciated the work of EED over the past six years. If I can support your work in any way, by contributing to the success of this organisation, I will be very happy to do so.”

In comment on McAllister’s election, Leffler as outgoing Chair of the EED Governing Body stated, “I am very happy that David McAllister will take on this role and will steer the EED’s work over the next few years. He has particularly strong experience and I am sure he will ensure and support EED’s continued connection with the European Parliament.”
