Right Side NGO Launches I Am Fearless Campaign to Mark #IDAHOBiT

17 May 2018

17 May marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, an occasion to raise awareness of LGBTQI rights violations and stimulate interest in LGBTQI rights work worldwide. This year’s theme, “Alliances for Solidarity”, aims to create an inclusive society where no LGBTQI person is left behind.

Promoting equality is at the heart of EED's work: we support numerous initiatives active in this field throughout the European neighbourhood. One of our partners, Right Side NGO, launched a campaign to mark the occasion and to send a message that “there is no place for stigma, hate and discrimination in Armenia”. Watch their new video, which shows the level of public acceptance of trans-people in the country and tells the story of trans activists who overcame the challenges they faced and became FEARLESS.

Right Side, the first NGO specialising in transgender issues in Armenia, is devoted to strengthening trans-activism and challenging the stereotypes surrounding the transgender community. In the last two years, Right Side documented more than 100 cases of gender-based hate crimes, just this year having two cases of violent attacks on trans women. The victims were in both cases heavily injured.

The NGO also published a statement underlining that “fundamental freedoms and rights of trans people, such as freedom of movement, right to education, right to have a family are restricted because of the existing gaps in legislation. These problems marginalize trans people from the society”. Read the full statement here.
