The combination of domestic repressions and a relatively low level of support from the international community leaves democracy and human rights activists in Azerbaijan extremely isolated.

The crackdown on dissent that started in 2014 continues to intensify. Dozens of journalists, independent bloggers, and human rights activists are behind bars. Scores of independent lawyers who defend opposition activists have been disbarred and independent media outlets shut down.
