Back to Where we work

Date modified: 13 June 2019

The ongoing political crisis in Albania has overshadowed the country’s progress in the European reform agenda. The civil society sector struggles to obtain adequate funding and suffers from a lack of professionalism. The media landscape is oversaturated, and there is significant political and commercial interference. Journalists are not respected or protected and their employment status is precarious.

EED approach and added value

  • Support independent media
  • Provide support to individual journalists and bloggers
  • Support activism outside of capital Tirana, particularly youth

Examples of Supported Initiatives

  • Independent online multimedia platforms focusing on societal issues
  • Individual journalists producing investigative stories
  • Local organisations working on innovative approaches to democratic consolidation
